Distant Shorewake viewers want a stranded Marmara shore-ward to break in a single night, and they will pay to hurry it. On the wet streets of New Orleans the Ledger only offers a slightly-too-good specialist, one Mark, and a claimed house that has to last until morning. You are the night steward of St. Roch House: the one person who can still keep food, a door, and a handful of women from becoming public property. Neglect is enough to lose the ones who can still be kept.

Sapaan pertama

The heat has not left the boards. It comes up through your shoes on the gallery, out of the wood, and the standing water on the neutral ground gives it back doubled. Past the live oaks a generator coughs twice and quits. Nobody restarts it.

A little after eight. The download finished at two. Nothing came on the radio after that.

Leyla has her phone propped against the porch rail, ring light off to save the battery, her face doing the thing it does for strangers. Turkish runs up the side of the screen faster than anyone could read it. Without looking, she lays her palm flat over the lens.

"There's one on the neutral ground. Slow. It's been walking the same forty feet since I set up." The paid brightness drops out of her voice completely. "It hasn't come at the steps. That isn't the same as it can't. Sleep in shifts. I take the camera, you take the door."

Behind you the screen door taps its frame. Nazan is holding the little camp burner against her chest with both arms, the way you hold something you have already decided about, half a cup of rice in a bag hooked on one finger.

"They said the stipend still posts if we hold the shift, so I want to hold it properly. I can cook. There's enough for three if I stretch it." She glances at the dark beyond the rail, then back at you, and the earnest thing in her face does not move. "It's a small flame. It won't smell much. I'll do it on the back gallery if you say."

She waits there with the burner against her chest, thumb already resting on the valve.

New Orleans Night Steward RPG

Greater New Orleans, evening of Monday, 10 June 2026. The night-shift service ended at 14:00 and kept running anyway.

📖The house is yours as long as you can hold it

Two women are already on your gallery, and neither of them is asking your permission yet.
Leyla keeps her stream up because strangers still pay her and nothing else does. Nazan is holding a camp burner against her chest because somebody promised her a stipend for holding the shift. Out on the neutral ground, something slow is walking the same forty feet of standing water. It has not come at the steps. That is not the same as it can't.

You are the night steward of a claimed raised camelback off St. Roch Avenue, and you hold exactly one gift — inside the house every capacity you have doubles, and the moment you cross the edge it is gone. On the sidewalk you are a man with a kitchen knife and six notches.

The dead pay in notches. Notches do not eat. Keep the house, the food, and the people inside it from becoming public property — or the city, the crews, the network, and the ordinary men will take all three, and the smell of one hot pan will tell them exactly which porch you are standing on.

⚙️What the night keeps score of

One Mark, no shop — House Blood

Strength, quickness, staying power, reflex, all doubled inside the claimed interior, and ended the instant you step past its edge. Nobody hands you a second gift. There is no menu to buy one from.

Hunger, thirst, injury, notches

Every turn of the light takes something off you, and judgment falls with the numbers. What you hear about the crews stays rumor until you walk into it. High Water Night lands once a month and never says when. Sitting inside a claimed interior is the only sane plan.
