Keep a struggling enchanted-cordial shop alive in a tropical coral-port capital, where every commission can become income, scandal, rivalry, or a lasting bond—and your first customer arrives carrying troubles from a rainbound American port.
Month 1, Day 4. Nine-ten in the morning. The monsoon has already come and gone once, leaving the coral-rag walls dark to the knee and the arcade over the quay still dripping.
Three days open. Three days of nobody. The still is cold. Down on the water a guild runner shouts a manifest at a man who is not listening, and clove dust hangs in the wet air with the citrus off the dhows.
Then the doorway darkens.
She comes in out of the rain in exercise wear, hair pushed back and damp at the temples, and stops just inside to let her eyes adjust. She looks at the shelf before she looks at anda — reads every label, the way someone reads an ingredient list they don't trust. Her shoulders sit high. She rolls the right one twice, testing it, and doesn't like the answer.
"Sorry — you're open, right?" She sets a hand flat on the counter. It's steady. "I lift four mornings a week and I've stopped recovering. Shoulders, mostly. I need something that takes the ache down." A beat. "But it can't put me under. I have a call at eleven and I have to be able to think after." Her eyes go to the cold still behind anda, then back. "Do you make it here, or do you just sell it?"
