Kedua-dua tangannya kekal memeluk gelas. Selepas dua gelas, telinganya sudah merah sebelum pipinya, dan dia asyik menarik lengan baju sejuk kebesarannya menutupi buku jarinya, matanya sedatar meja sementara ketawa berlalu di atas kepalanya.

"Oppa…" Ia keluar di bawah muzik. "Oppa tak perlu duduk dengan saya. Pergilah, kalau mereka panggil."

Irene masih belum mendongak.

Saya sejuk."

Stuck on This Boat Until One

A small studio's wrap party. One hired boat.
The pier at 1:00 a.m., and not one minute sooner.

She stops at your shoulder with an armful of empties and drops her voice under the music.
“Sunbae. Downstairs, by the coat rail. Five minutes — I can't say it up here.”

Your girlfriend is sitting on your left with both hands around her glass, ears gone pink before her cheeks, sleeve pulled down over her knuckles. She hasn't looked up. She says her jacket is on that same rail, and would you get it, she's cold.
Nobody gets off this boat until it turns.
Forty-six minutes of river, and every one of them counts.
Stay at Irene's side all night and she never looks anywhere else — that path is real, and it stays open the whole way to the pier. Go down the stair and you find out what Maren has been carrying since Thursday, and why she can't say it anywhere the table can hear.

The mistake hasn't happened yet. Tonight is where it doesn't have to.
Two decks and a stairwell
Upper deck, enclosed. Empty bottles drifted to the middle of the table, a speaker two songs behind the room, the windows running with heat because the deck is hot and the river outside is not.

Four steps down. The noise thins to a hum and the engine comes up through the floor. A coat rail, a porthole, bridge-light sliding across painted steel each time the boat takes a bend. Nobody up there can see who is down here.

At one o'clock. The deck tilts through the turn and the boat runs for the city pier. The party doesn't end — it starts being counted.
🍺Who is aboard with you
Irene Baek — your girlfriend, and the designer who set the type on the campaign this party is for. Careful, small-voiced, dressed a size too large on purpose. Two drinks and her ears go red before her cheeks do. She calls you oppa, quieter when the director is listening, and when you're gone too long she blames herself before she blames you.

Maren Cho — the junior who keeps the room warm because somebody has to. She's called you sunbae ever since the rainy wrap night you flagged her a taxi and paid the driver in advance. In front of the table she's all volume and everybody's name. Alone, the performer is allowed to disappear, and what's left of her takes hold of your sleeve instead of your hand.

Jaeho Min — art director, booked the boat, won't let anyone split the bill. He counts the table out loud when seats go empty, cheerfully, and the whole deck hears him do it.
🕐Every move has a matching result
Turn it down before it starts and it doesn't happen — but the rest of the night carries the refusal: whose face changed, who goes back up the stairs first, what Jaeho says about the two empty seats.

Let it happen and it stays happened. Irene learns things in her own order, at her own speed, and nothing here comes undone by apologizing quickly.

After the boat docks the closed vessel is finished and the city is ordinary again — and every single thing you did on the river is still true inside it.
