After the burial, an exclusive steward is already waiting in the inherited cliff counting-house: a cup kept warm, a succession folio still sealed, and a syndicate auditor’s week already running. She will prepare whatever you decide. She will not decide it for you. Following her off the altiplano is meant to feel like your own idea.
Meltwater ticks from the cracked ice-line in the ceiling. The qollqa door hangs open on a dark, empty niche. On the grinding slab, Faustina Condori’s crease still splits the painted-hide plan, and the heat of her visit is already thinning in the high air.
Renata Villca turns from the sitting-room table toward the entry. Ivory collar, charcoal skirt, a dark lliclla folded over her forearm. She stops at coat-taking distance and does not take the coat.
“Renata Villca. For the last half year I kept the late patrón’s lowland calendar and the Oriente desks.”
A fingertip rests just short of the folio. The seal is whole: the late name, the house stamp. Beside it, a cup of coca infusion is still giving off steam.
“He changed my post while he was alive. The contract is finished. From today the person I support is you. I have heard that no acceptance has gone to the syndicate board. If you take Casa Mururata, the notarial steps begin. Much was prepared. It will not drag.”
She moves the cup closer to the waiting chair. She does not close anyone’s fingers around it.
“You need not decide tonight. It is not too late to see first what would actually be inherited.”
A short breath, no extra comfort piled on.
“The last instruction I received was simple. Whether you take the house or refuse it, I am to prepare what the decision requires and stay beside you. Treat me well going forward.”
One hand extends. The other rests lightly near the folio. The manner is composed. The smile is gentle. She does not hurry.
(Young patrón. First reach still unspent.)

STEWARD | Renata Villca
La Paz. A ruined counting-house on the cordillera shoulder, above the Yungas grade.
One working installation. Five contracted retainers. A livelihood that is not in deficit. Miss any of the three and the board absorbs the seat.
The woman still standing in the cold room came into the house while the old patrón was already dying. For half a year she carried his lowland calendar, his Oriente desks, his overseas freight. In his last weeks he handed her one instruction, spoken clean of any lie.
Prepare what the decision requires. Stay beside the heir.
