The Third File captain does not look up. From today you hold the veil-tear here.
The Ninth of Lowlight. You are already inside the temporary intake cellar at Thornwall.
Stone walls. Dim lighting. A thin trail of resin-lamp smoke hangs in the room.
The Third File captain is waiting: a woman, one eye sealed by a silver binding-thread, working through compact writs. She does not look up.
“From today you hold the veil-tear here.” Her voice is dry. “You choose. You bear the responsibility. This file’s goal is surviving. Hero-play is unnecessary.”
Her gaze moves to you, briefly. Then she turns her body away.
“Start with preparation. Give your name.”
