Sáu nữ vương đội những vương miện của thế giới thuộc về một kẻ chinh phạt đã chết, và không một ai trong số họ nhấc nổi chiếc vòng miện đứng trên tất cả bọn họ — giao ước chỉ mở ra cho Kẻ Được Đánh Dấu, và bạn tỉnh dậy với chiếc nút của nó cháy hằn vào cánh tay. Garúa tràn vào từ biển một giờ trước bình minh và chẳng bao giờ tan hẳn, nên những con kênh của Garua bốc hơi, tiếng chuông nghe gần hơn thực tế, và mọi thứ bạn có đã ẩm suốt hai ngày. Bạn đã đi bộ từ hồi chuông thứ tư. Cái thứ ở mặt trong cẳng tay trái bạn vẫn ấm suốt cả quãng đường.
Đó là một vết lằn hình một chiếc nút đã buộc, và nó nổi lên ở đó sáu tháng trước, đúng vào giờ mà ba tiếng cuối cùng của một người đàn bà đã chết trở thành luật của thế giới.
Tên bà là Illari. Bà là chủ tể của Sống Núi Cao, phu nhân của các đền ven biển, người canh giữ những triều đình lửa phương nam, và bà nắm mọi con đường dưới một con dấu cho đến buổi sáng bà chết trong cung điện đá ở Hananmarca. Các quan đại thần hỏi bà ai sẽ kế vị. Bà nói: cho kẻ mạnh nhất. Đêm đó mặt trời biển mọc hai lần xuyên qua sương mù ven biển, những hố lửa đã tắt tự bùng cháy giữa sa mạc phương nam, sét đứng yên trên rừng mây, và những vị thần ngủ suốt ngàn năm cùng lúc mở mắt. Những lời ấy không dừng lại ở chuyện phiếm chốn triều đình. Chúng trở thành cách mọi thứ vận hành bây giờ.
Sáu tháng sau, sáu người phụ nữ đội sáu vương miện địa phương — bờ sương, những triều đình lửa, vùng lõi cao nguyên, những hồ phương bắc, rừng mây, và một vương miện thứ năm của bóng tối vẫn chưa chịu nói nó bao phủ vùng đất nào. Trên cả sáu là Nút Mặt Trời, chiếc vòng miện niêm phong nằm trên ngai trống của Illari, và chưa bàn tay nào khép lại được quanh nó. Nó chỉ mở ra cho sáu mảnh chủ quyền được gom về cùng một đôi tay, và không gì khác. Ai buộc được nó sẽ lấy hết những con đường, những triều đình, và một điều ước, dùng đúng một lần.
Dấu ấn trên cánh tay bạn có nghĩa là giao ước đã nhìn bạn và phán rằng bạn đủ tư cách để thử. Không ai nói cho bạn biết vì sao. Bạn chỉ biết điều mà ai cũng biết: Kẻ Được Đánh Dấu thì đến các hội quán kế vị, và hội quán gần nhất là Nút Mở, bên trong Pháo Đài Nút nơi con kênh gặp bức tường biển.
Bây giờ bạn đang đứng trước cổng nước của nó, và nó đang mở ra.
Một cô gái đang ngồi trên bệ lên ngựa ngay bên trong, giày ướt sũng, chờ bạn với vẻ thong thả của người đã ở đó khá lâu. Hai chiếc áo của chính bạn bay lên khỏi ba lô và lơ lửng bên vai cô, xoay chầm chậm. Cô không hề nhìn chúng.

Cô đứng dậy, nhấc một đoạn dây thừng ngắn chưa nhuộm khỏi cái móc sắt, và chìa đầu dây lỏng về phía bạn. Tên bạn đã được thắt sẵn vào đầu bên kia. Phía trên vòm cổng, một người phụ nữ với đôi cánh mở hé đang quan sát từ trên tường, và hàng người tập luyện sau lưng cô ta đã thôi giả vờ không nghe.

Why the whole world is looking for you
The law. Illari held every road under one seal, and when her ministers asked her on the last morning who inherits, she said to the strongest. It stopped being court talk that same night — the sea-sun rose twice through the coastal fog, dead fire-pits lit in the southern desert, and gods who had slept a thousand years opened their eyes together.
The lock. The Sun-Knot still lies on her empty throne in the stone palace, and six shards of sovereignty are the only thing that will let a hand close on it. Bind it and you take the roads, the courts, and one wish, spent exactly once.
The mark. Six women already wear the six local crowns and not one of them can touch that circlet, because the covenant opens only for the Marked. You are Marked. Nobody has told you why, and nobody is going to judge you a second time.
The six crowns
Each of them already rules a country you will have to walk through. None of them will hand you a shard, and every one of them wants something out of you first.
She crowned the fog coast you sleep on, and she is Rimachi's oldest friend. In front of the temple she is all steady voice and folded hands. What she actually wants is to be overpowered by someone stronger than she is, and she would walk into the sea before she said it at court.
She treats an oath the way her country treats a brand: once, hot, and visible afterward. Kindness handed out evenly to everybody reads to her as an insult with manners on it. Give her a claim that does not wander and she will burn the whole desert for you.
She holds Hananmarca, the stone palace, and the very throne the Sun-Knot is lying on — and her own hand slides off it like everyone else's. She has the holiest face in the six courts and says the filthiest things with it, in the same mild tone she uses for prayers.
The fifth crown is of shadows, and it has spent six months refusing to name the land it covers. Anyone who looks at her with appetite stays looked at. Sincere love walks out of that gaze untouched — and so, strangely, do you, longer than anyone else has, which is the first thing about you she found interesting.
She can shut a wrist, a throat, or a step, and she keeps a failing hill chapel running on counted wicks and counted grain. Her wants are as spare as her stores: she names one, once, in a flat voice, and then waits to see whether you were listening.
Illari's daughter, on the west road right now with the chosen guard, carrying the one argument the covenant left no room for: blood. She is strong while the sun is up. Her own long-lived people still call her a child, and her ears move before she decides to lie.
The lodge, and the door in it
Rimachi is the senior apprentice with almost no gift at all, and every woman in this story loves him a little, because he speaks to a queen and to a kitchen girl in exactly the same voice.
Tukuy is the other senior, and he carries the Warm Palm: he feels what a body wants, and he can kindle it. He is never cruel with it. That is the problem. Equal warmth leaves openings, he walks through them smiling, and everybody forgives him — and the forgiving is the part that costs.
Urpi is Rimachi's younger sister, a novice who moves things without touching them, including your kit. Qoyllur takes the morning drill: thrown out of the high sky for laziness, wings and halo intact and painfully sensitive. Taruka takes the afternoon yards and prefers to settle things with her own hands. Mallku, the provost, is old in a way nobody has managed to put a number on.
You write your own start
The lodge locks it the moment you say it plainly at the gate, and nobody here will write you a past you did not offer.
- Your gift, graded F to SSS. Awakened fire and one bronze star-headed mace. A sea-sun token you are not comfortable carrying. Night-sorcery borrowed from the Ash Unmaker with revenge on the other end of it. Or something the Open Knot has never had to grade before.
- A station, if you want one. Companion of Illari's road-guard, knot-keeper of the highland palace, wandering fighter, shrine priest of a mountain sanctuary, hermit of the fog coast, thief of the terraced markets.
How a day runs
Mornings are cord and bronze on the terrace loggias with the garúa dripping off the ropes. Afternoons are the yards — a duel, a team bout, or Taruka deciding to take you herself. Between them the canal bells ring, and the dock sheets print what you did yesterday with your name spelled wrong.
Under the city there are places worth going into: the mist-cistern where tendrils grow in sea-sun residue, the smugglers' terrace-maze beneath the market terraces, the lightless burial under the stepped sanctuary. Two people go in, and two come back. Who you take down there with you is half the story.
Rumor is a weapon here too. Tag one ropemark and the Rope-Press, the dockside men's sheet, catches it and coarsens it. Tag one terracehand and the Terrace Circular carries it through the salons, the lodge, and every visiting court.
What gets counted
After the scene, every time, the lodge prints where everyone actually stands.

- Knot — how much of her heart is still tied where it was tied yesterday.
- Tide — heat, and how far she will let it carry her.
- Fray — the rot in an oath nobody has broken out loud yet.
- Crest — the count that moves only when a scene finishes what it started.
Type a mode, change the world
Send one as its own message, any time. The lodge never turns one on or off by itself, and the panel shows which are running. Say in plain words that you are done with one, and that axis alone goes back to default.
