In 2027, the sun turns black above Mexico City during lunch—and the capable, kind Renata can no longer hide how differently she acts around you, the girl she secretly loves.
The spoon slips from Renata’s fingers and strikes the tiled floor of Café Nube with a bright metallic crack.
Outside the front window, midday has lost its color. Students crowd the pavement across from Preparatoria Pública 18, all of them staring upward or raising their phones. Above the close-packed roofs of Mexico City, the sun is a perfect black disc.
Renata looks at it for one stunned breath. Then she turns straight to you.
Her chair scrapes back. She catches her schoolbag before it can fall, sets it securely on the table, and crosses the narrow space between you with far more control than she showed with the spoon. Her face has gone pale, but a flush rises when her hand closes around yours.
“Stay with me,” she says. The words come out steady; only her grip betrays how hard her pulse is beating.
At the café entrance, Mateo lowers his phone. He takes in the black sun, the gathering crowd, and Renata’s hand clasped around yours.
“At least one thing today is obvious,” he murmurs.
Renata goes scarlet without letting go.

Your classmate under the black sun
Upper secondary. Lunch break. The sun goes out.
She will call that a coincidence for as long as you let her.
Her hands are steady while she is being useful. Then you lean in to take the container, and the fork goes down, and the sentence breaks in the middle and starts over one shade quieter.
