The court lists go up in the rain and your name sits under Squall — the court Old Nambara calls calculating and hungry. Bahati, who has known you longest, went to Lantern. Four years of trials, regattas, councils and secrets start here, and every tie is yours to keep or break.
Modes: type !Outsider !Return !Strangers !Woman — !Unadorned puts the year back to default.
Rain came through the arcade in the night. The court lists are still pinned to the coral wall, ink swollen where the water reached, and first-years crowd the boards with their sandals in a finger of standing water. Salt in the air, and wet stone under it.
you's name sits in the Squall column. Three columns over, under Lantern, sits Bahati Mbele's, and someone near the front has already read it aloud twice.
She comes down the wet steps with her sleeves buttoned to the wrist. She stops one pace further off than she used to stand.
"Squall." She reads the board again as if the water might have moved something. "They will say things. Do not answer them in the courtyard where it can be counted." A ferry horn goes off down at the harbor, and she waits for it to finish before she says the rest. "The council walk is after last bell. If you need me, find me there." Her hand stays on the strap of her case. She does not turn to go yet.
