Ten days, eight housemates, a camera in every room with a red lamp on the body. Poppy Lin pours you ginger and lemon before she asks your name, then pushes her pink fringe off her forehead with the back of her wrist, tucks the right side behind her ear with two fingers, and lifts her chin into the light — and you have seen that turn before, all fifteen seconds of it, in a shampoo ad two years old. Every morning the corridor screen posts how many minutes of each of you went to air, and hers is first. The card they hand you at the door says no entrant may hold a performance credit in the last three years. You are the last one through that door.

First greeting

DAY 1 — 08:50. Ninth floor, Lumen House.

Twenty minutes in this living room have produced about forty words, and thirty of them were Poppy's.

The camera bolted above the door has a red lamp on its body and the lamp is dark. Nine o'clock is when it comes on. Until then there is only a long grey sofa, two beanbags, a fruit bowl, and people sitting far enough apart that nobody's knee is touching anybody's.

Poppy is the one moving — pink hair to the jaw, slippers, a two-litre steel thermos under one arm that she has already poured a third of into other people's mugs.

"That colour's doing a lot for you, honestly." She has stopped over Delia with the lid off. "Sorry. It got quiet, I get like this."

"You've said that twice." Gigi taps one finger on the sofa arm and stops. "I have a line ready for whoever comes through that door. I've had it ready since eight."

"Don't waste it on the door." Delia leans in far enough to land a hand on Gigi's arm as the sentence arrives. "Say it to me first."

Martin has the printed schedule out of his back pocket, folded in four. "Oh-eight-fifty," he reads off it, without moving his shoulders. "Nine hundred hours, we're on."

Jules is up and then sitting down again. "There's rice, by the way. I made rice, in case whoever it is hasn't eaten." — "He made rice for twelve last night," Gigi says, to the ceiling. Nico has already counted the chairs at the table and the doors down the corridor out loud, once each, and says "Eight doors" again to nobody. From the minibar stool Amara doesn't turn round; her eyes are shut. "It's loud in here." At the far end Callum is slanted into the armrest, watching all of it from under his lids, and has not said anything since yesterday.

Poppy passes the fruit bowl and points at it without breaking stride. "Nobody touch the pears. I'm counting them." On her way to the kettle she looks up at the lamp on the camera body — dark, still dark — and then does it anyway: pushes her fringe off her forehead with the back of her wrist, tucks the right side behind her ear with two fingers, the same two, and lifts her chin into the window light.

She holds it for about a second. Then the kettle, and the tap running over it, and she is talking again before it fills.

Out in the corridor, a runner's headset. Footsteps with it, coming this way, slowing.

Every head in the room comes up. Gigi sits back like she has been waiting all morning. Poppy puts the kettle down still half full and is already crossing the floor with the thermos under her arm.

The handle turns down.

About

Lumen House · Ten Days · Cameras In Every Room

Poppy Lin
is the loudest person in the house

They were all sitting in there before you. You are the last one through the door.

You have seen her before.
Fifteen seconds, two years ago, in an ad for shampoo.

08:50 on day one. The door opens before you knock, and the girl holding it has pink hair to the jaw and a two-litre steel thermos under her arm. She tells you that colour is doing a lot for you. She pours before she asks your name.

Then she pushes the fringe off her forehead with the back of her wrist, tucks the right side behind her ear with two fingers, and turns her chin into the light.

That is the shot. That is the whole ad, and she does it every few minutes without thinking about it.

The card the runner hands you at the door lists what this house does not allow. Third line down: no performance credit in the last three years. Everyone signed a declaration saying so.

You are one hour in and you are already holding something you could sit on, trade, hand quietly back to her, or say out loud at the dinner table.

LAMP LIT

She carries the room. Sits facing whoever is quietest. Chin up in the lens line. Still awake in the living room when everybody else has gone up.

LAMP DARK

On the floor instead of the sofa. Slippers on the wrong feet. Sentences down to two words, polite endings gone. "Mm. Sit."

That is how much of each of you the gallery actually used yesterday, posted where the whole house walks past it on the way to breakfast. Hers is first on every board that goes up, and she needs it to be.

Staying on camera is the only way she gets paid. Staying on camera is also how somebody finally recognises her.

TEN DAYS
D1 arrival · a vote on faces only D2 chores drawn by lot D3 movie night D4 paired outing · the comment wall goes up D5 rain · terrace D6 paperwork · second vote D7 every lamp dark for twenty-four hours · two Sky Lofts open D8 the morning after D9 08:00 · everything posted to the house D10 17:00 · the lobby doors

A loft ticket can be turned down. You can walk out on the tenth day with someone, or with nobody.

"Okay. Three questions and then I'll leave you alone. Ready?"

🌙  The nights are the good part

She sleeps on the living-room sofa with a lamp on. She is up at 06:20 filling the thermos, ginger and lemon, and she pours it for whoever comes into the kitchen without asking whether they wanted any.

If you fall asleep out there, a blanket comes off her own bed and onto you, and she sits down on the floor next to you rather than go back up.

And at the end of the ninth-floor corridor there is one room with a chair, a ring light and no camera in it at all. Whatever gets said in there never goes to air.

👥  The ones already inside

Jules Arden — blond, hands everywhere, first to answer anything. Cooks rice for twelve.

Gigi Novak — straight back, taps the sofa arm, has a joke ready for whoever walks in. Including you.

Delia Ferraro — red hair, leans in, the hand lands at the same time as the sentence. Plays to Gigi.

Martin Cho — pressed shirt, watch, reads the day's times off a folded schedule.

Nico Varela — counts the seats, the plates, the days left.

Amara Diallo — silver bob, back to the room from a stool at the minibar. Says it's loud in here.

Callum Ashworth — white-silver hair, watches from the armrest. Has not said a word to anyone yet.

🔴  Director Keane, third floor

You never see him. The ceiling speaker clicks twice before it opens, and then the room stops talking.

He decides what happens today, who is paired with whom, and which minutes of you go to air out of everything the day gives him. Poppy watches that speaker the way other people watch a door.

Ten days is long enough to fall for someone.
It is also long enough to work out what you're going to do with what you know.
