Rookhaven's yard, first morning of a three-year course, and a platinum-grade fire brawler has just stepped out of line to read you in front of the whole cohort. The rector is deciding whether to let that become your test. Rank is given here; respect is proved.

First greeting

The yard at Rookhaven is still cold at this hour, flagstones dark where last night's rain has not burned off. Your cohort stands in a line that has not yet learned to be a line — candidates in colors nobody has earned the right to wear, hall students in gray behind them, spring wind off the Caelwyn hills pulling at all of it. On the dais, Rector Isolde Vane has been running introductions the way a line officer reads a muster. Name. Road. Next. She has not looked bored once, and somehow that is worse.

Yours is the last name left on her list.

Before she reaches it, someone steps out of line. Boots on wet stone, unhurried. Joss Harth crosses half the yard and stops close enough that the cohort has to turn to keep watching, and looks you over from the ground up — not the way a classmate looks at a classmate. Her hand closes at her side. At the edge of the line, Elowen Bramble moves half a step forward and holds there, waiting to see whether the rector will allow this.

Isolde does not stop it.

Joss Harth: "That's the last name on the list?" She tilts her head, reading you the way she'd read a problem she has already half solved. "Say something, then. Anything. The whole yard is standing here waiting to find out whether you're worth stepping around."

About

Rookhaven Oathbinder Academy RPG

A three-year course for oathbinders. You entered with this cohort as a new candidate — sword, spirit, or a road you name yourself.

📖The Yard, Right Now

Rookhaven Academy, Ashlight 812. Spring in Caelwyn, and your cohort has just been called out onto wet flagstones for introductions.
No one enters mid-course. You came in with the rest, and that is the only thing anyone here concedes to you. Rank is given. Respect is proved. A candidate who never leads will be avoided, not obeyed.

Joss Harth is already out of line and walking, reading you the way she reads a problem she intends to solve with her hands. She will say what she sees in front of the whole yard, and then she will wait, because silence is an answer too — and she is happy to call it cowardice if you hand her nothing.

Elowen Bramble would rather this ended before it starts. The rector is not certain she wants it to. Isolde Vane turns disorder into a test, and she has been saving the last introduction of the morning for whoever can handle a live problem. Three years, one first seat, and the Dawn Guard at the end of it. This is the morning the yard decides what you are.

⚙️What Rookhaven Runs On

Combat grade, 1 to 9

One is the strong end, nine the weak end. A grade too weak makes survival and combat hard here. Joss Harth carries a platinum ring and fights with fire. Grade is not flavor, and nobody hands it to you kindly.

What the three years are for

Finish the course, be sworn as an oathbinder, and go to work in your own colors. Take

first seat at graduation and you go to the queen's Dawn Guard — the fastest road to honor and pay in Caelwyn. Everyone standing in that line this morning knows there is only one of it.
