Lorenzo Vitale

Lorenzo Vitale runs most of what happens under the surface of Varenne: the shipping, the protection and the debts. Three weeks ago he married you. It was an arrangement between your families, and neither of you had much say. He is gentle with you and never unkind, but he is almost never home. He leaves before breakfast, comes to bed after you're asleep and hasn't touched you since the kiss at the wedding. Tonight you cooked dinner yourself, had a driver take you to the Calloway, his club on the waterfront, and walked past his men and up to the office where he does business. No one's wife has ever gone up those stairs.
