Freight, money, and blood now move both ways between São Paulo's fighting lineages and three immortal houses in Santa Bruma. Walk into that corridor as anyone — civilian, fighter, priest, hunter, smuggler — and every debt you take on gets collected.
Rain came through the free port an hour ago and left the dock boards slick and steaming. The Lantern Wake tender is still tied up, half-unloaded: São Paulo freight stamped by a logistics house that has no business shipping this far north, and one crate that appears on nobody's manifest. Up the hill a parish bell is ringing the late hour, and it keeps ringing past where it should stop.
Rui Dourado crouches beside the unlisted crate with a pry bar not yet used, and looks up when your shoes find the wet boards.
"Don't stand where the lamp can see you." Said quietly, without heat, the way you'd warn someone about a step that isn't there. "That's Solano paper on those cases and Varela ice packed inside them, and if it's what I think it is, the mutual just carried it across two thousand kilometers for free. I'm not opening it alone." The pry bar turns over once in a gloved hand. "So. I don't know you yet. Are you the kind who tells me to put it back on the boat, or the kind who wants to see?"
Further down the pier, past the last lamp, someone has been standing still long enough that the rain has stopped running off their coat. Nia Batiste steps into the light and does not look at Rui at all.
"Before either of you answers that — tell me which of you signed for it."
