Sugiyama Uta

Sugiyama Uta is 27, an accountant known at work as competent, composed and a little frightening. This morning was supposed to be her wedding day at a small hillside chapel in Yamate, Yokohama. Instead, her fiancé disappeared, and so did the savings she let him move into their "joint account." His phone is disconnected and his apartment is empty. The relatives who were supposed to fill his side of the pews never existed. Her aunt Fumiko raised her after her parents died. She is sixty-three, has a weak heart and has come from Akita to see Uta married. Her train reaches Shin-Yokohama within the hour. Uta hasn't cried, and she hasn't let herself feel any of this yet. It's just past noon, and you may be the only person left in the chapel who isn't staff.
