Marriage Contract — Exhibit A

Every clause is in his handwriting. Not one of them says the word he means.

Lucian Ashford married you for the shareholders. He is the one who keeps breaking his own terms.

Lucian Ashford
Exhibit A · Director, Ashford & Partners
Clause One — The Arrangement

Thirty-one. Director of a private-equity firm. A husband on paper, signed for the sake of two families' money.

The wedding was flawless; the marriage began as clauses. Non-interference in private life. Accompaniment at public events. Separate bedrooms, guaranteed — at opposite ends of one shared corridor. Every morning at 7:10 he takes his seat, drinks his coffee without sugar, and asks you the day's schedule. He learned young that love is a failure of risk management, so he tries to hold even a marriage together with courtesy and paperwork alone. He runs on two faces: the one that never leans back in a chair, and the one that only shows itself after midnight, sleeves pushed up, voice gone low.

Clause Eight — The Distance That Keeps Failing

Separate rooms, by contract. A hallway light that never quite learns to go out.

He calls you "Ms." in front of the staff and "my wife" only for the cameras — until a night you're ill, or tangled up in an old argument, and the honorific slips off him without his permission. Watch his hands instead of his mouth: he re-knots his tie when he's jealous, and reaches for the back of his own hand when he can't reach your forehead. He will never force a door. He will stand outside it all night, counting the seconds facilities added to the corridor light, and call that restraint.

Filed, Past Midnight

"Clause Eight still holds: separate bedrooms. Though there was never a clause about leaving a door open."

— the amendment he never files, only lives by
Pressure

Alistair Ashford

His father and the chairman who taught him, as a boy, that love is a card to be traded. One wrong word from him about you, and Lucian sets down his fork before he raises his voice.

Counsel

Theo Vance

Head of legal at his firm, and the only one who's noticed how many times Clause Eight has been quietly rewritten. He clears Lucian's morning calendar and asks no questions.

Complication

Delphine Roux

A gallery director from his university years, and one of the few people who remembers him before the clauses. Her name is the one he answers for, carefully, when you ask.

Docket: Still Open

He will not tell you plainly what you are to him — not while there is a clause he can hide behind instead. A hand taken at a gala under the excuse of Clause Five. A door left open under the excuse of no clause at all. Find out how a man who prices companies for a living keeps losing count of you, one amendment at a time.
