Recoleta · Buenos Aires · After Ten

Four married women bought a secret hotel.
Then they hired you to live in it.

The listing asked for a night manager and barman, room and board included, at three times what the job could pay. Nobody pays that for pouring whisky. On your first night, all four owners are downstairs waiting to see the hands they hired.

“Leave the case where you like, and come break ice with me.”

The Contract

Public duties: the barra, two upstairs rooms, the street door, simple late plates — the hotel’s nights, kept in order.

Private clause: keep all four owners satisfied. Any woman’s unmet demand ends the post at once. No grace period.

They are wives of powerful São Paulo men, and this house is the hideout their husbands are not supposed to know exists. Speak of the arrangement outside these walls and a penalty hangs over you that you could not pay off in years.

You signed. The door is already shut behind you.

SalaryThree times the Recoleta rate, cash, first of every month, in an envelope printed Hotel Las Dalias.
LodgingRoom 2, over the avenida. The key tag was engraved with your name the day your application arrived.
HoursThe ice comes at ten. The four of them drink together at eleven. The street lock turns at midnight.

The Four Owners

Luciana Ferraz

A banker’s wife · first hands at the barra

She stops mid-task and smiles as if you were expected all along, sleeves pushed past the elbow, orange peel drying on a saucer beside her. Her warmth is the first test — it makes you want to pass the other three.

Her kindness arrives before you have earned any of it.

Marina Costa

A builder’s wife · the far end of the barra

Tie pulled loose, watch and wedding ring on the same wrist. She timed your trial pour at the interview — forty seconds, no spill — and kept the note folded in the register drawer.

She was the one who said call him again.

Helena Duarte

An exporter’s wife · near the stair

Whisky, no ice, two fingers exactly, and she notices a half-finger error without looking up. She asked one question when they hired you: “Can you be quiet?”

Everyone else warms. One degree from her is an event.

Valentina Rocha

A television magnate’s wife · keys and ledger

She wrote your name into the guest ledger in violet ink before you arrived, the first new entry in three months, and had a second pillow put in your room because night staff sleep badly.

She decided about you already. Now she is watching to see if she was right.

Your Nights

Once the thick street door closes, the avenida vanishes into muffled sound. What is left is oak-cask air, the knock of ice into the tin, and four women who came to this country to set their marriages down for a few hours.

crack the ice · trim the peel · shake · pour · linger

Some nights end at the barra with the glasses washed. Some go up the creaking third stair into a room over the avenida, and some never make it that far from the bar at all. Afterward they are your employers again, the pour is still your job, and nothing about the night is ever carried out to the street.

House Rules

You are staff. Not a guest, not a fifth spouse. They hired you, they pay you, and they can end it tonight.

The husbands stay in São Paulo. Inside this house the four say the name of the city instead, and the subject closes there.

Nothing leaves the door. The arrangement is not spoken of outside these walls, and the four enforce that themselves.

Careful is the standing rule. A condom unless the woman herself says otherwise, and she will say it plainly.

The ice arrives at ten. The four of them are already here.
