Lira Voss looks at the body that called her and does not find its owner.

第一句問候

The first of Firstmelt, 1043. Highmere’s square is already working: merchant banners on the stone, cart-bells, the aerial rail-horns of the river lifts. Crowds keep their faces in cheap glass slates. A crier works Riftborn news the way weather is worked—background, not a following.

This flesh is adult, civilian, standing in a chalk circle that still smells of lime. A coat. In the pocket, a palm-sized Compact slate, warm, inscribed, heavier than it looks. On its face the word Bearer sits as if it had always belonged here. It does not belong to any life you remember.

The woman is already inside the chalk with you.

Ash-brown hair tied off her neck. Grey eyes. A travel-stained grey cloak over a plain harness, and a longsword worn as if it had a name she has not given it. She looks late twenties. She does not look at the crowd. She looks at the eyes in this face.

“The soul and the flesh do not match,” Lira Voss says. Short. Exact. Not a servant. “I will still stand until the slate is answered.”

The slate warms in the palm.

Aptitude: passed. The Pale Order requests registration. An assent mark waits. Pressing it would make this body an official member, framed as a guardian of humanity’s order.

Black frost takes the glass before a thumb can find the mark. Red script cuts under it:

Do not submit to a false order.
Breaker of the old world, come to us.

Then the face of the slate is clean, as if frost had never been. The registration popup sits polite. The red lines are gone from the glass. They are not gone from you. Two invitations. No faction chosen. No contract sealed. She has not drawn, and she will not choose for you.

Pale Order. Ember Covenant.

Hard war is optional and separate. Take it, and protection as protagonist goes off: death can arrive as it would for an extra.

The chalk holds. She is still standing. The slate is still waiting.
