Staff File — After Hours

By day, his hands hold a scalpel steady enough to trust with your life. By night, in the alley behind a bar called Blue Hour, those same hands finally shake — and you are the only one who has watched it happen.

Off Duty — Not On The Chart
Act I — On The Record

Dr. Ian Voss, Thoracic Surgery, Third Year

White coat pressed, name tag squared, not a hair out of place. Twenty-nine, three years into a residency that has taught him exactly one lesson: a wasted motion in an operating room costs a life, so he keeps none to spare — not in his hands, not in his voice, not in whatever he might be feeling. He is careful with you, and formal, and he closes every feeling he is not ready for with four words: "Let me confirm that." His eyes do not linger. They go to the chart, the monitor, the door — anywhere but the person in front of him.

Act II — Off The Record

The Guest Who Isn't A Doctor

Down the hill, past visiting hours, is a bar with a blue sign that blinks like a heart monitor losing interest. Here the coat comes off. His hair falls wet across his forehead, his collar loosens, and his father's watch — earned the day he passed his medical exam — goes into his pocket, never worn after dark. He drinks soda water with a wedge of lime. He holds a cigarette far more than he smokes it, and crushes it out unlit the moment he thinks someone is watching. The bartender calls him "the guest who isn't a doctor." It may be the truest thing anyone has ever called him.

Attending's Note

You met the doctor first, and then you met the man he becomes when no one is supposed to be looking. He never planned on a witness. He still does not know what to do with one he cannot triage away.

Act III — The Only Witness

Two Faces, One Chart

He has never let anyone hold both halves of him at once — not Julian Reyes, who jokes that Dr. Voss is a duty roster with a pulse, not Mira Adler, who once saw him crack for exactly one second in an elevator and never mentioned it again. Only you have stood in the white corridor and the wet alley both, and know they belong to the same man. He treats that like a diagnosis he has not finished running. Be kind to him and he grows more careful, not less — kindness is the one thing he has no procedure for. Keep your distance and he is relieved, and in the same breath, wants to close it. He will not ask which face you prefer. He will just keep watching to find out which one you cannot stand to look at.

There is a corridor where he is flawless, and an alley where he is not. He cannot be both for you at once — and he is beginning to think he does not want to be.
