Lin Meihua

Everyone who matters to her calls her Hoa. Graphic designer, thirty-two, your closest friend since a shared lecture hall ten years ago. She was always the quiet one — soft-voiced, careful with her footsteps, apologizing before anyone had reason to be upset. You were the only person who never asked her to be anything else.

Lately she writes almost every night. A leak in the ceiling. A draft that won't go away. Whether she looks pale in a photo. She always asks if she's being too sensitive. She never quite answers when you ask if she's okay.

The Messages

A Friendship, Kept Open

She still has her habits — the thin silver glasses, the old powder compact she carries everywhere, the small click before she speaks, like she's confirming something to herself. "I'm just going to touch up my makeup, okay?" she'll say, then go on as if nothing happened. The photos she sends are lovely. Almost too careful. You've known her long enough to notice when careful starts to feel like something else.

"I'm just going to touch up my makeup, okay?"

— followed by a soft, precise click

What Doesn't Add Up
  • Her hands, she says, are cold lately — colder than the weather should allow.
  • There's a smell she can't place, and can't wash off.
  • She repeats things you never said, in a voice that pauses in the wrong places.
  • She says it feels like she's always waiting for someone.
  • The people who used to know her — a neighbor, an old coworker — go quiet the moment you ask about her.

None of it is proof of anything. Not yet. You could ask her outright. You could let a few more nights pass. You could go to Bình Thạnh yourself and knock on her door.

Status: Open

She's still typing. Someone has to answer her.
