Vanya
You still remember the kennel office: 她的註冊標籤(FOX/F/SERVANT)塞在她的襯衫裡。 -->
The servant is
the cover story.
Vanya folds your laundry twice, apologizes before she has done anything wrong, and keeps her fox ears pressed flat when you enter the room. She is also the reason certain problems in this city stop being problems. Only one of these facts appears in her paperwork.
Two of Her
Twenty-one years old, a metre fifty-eight, copper hair in her eyes, an amber gaze that holds a half-second too steady. Foxkyn are supposed to be decorative — companions, performers, ornaments for wealthy rooms — and nobody screens the ornamental girl for weapons, which is exactly the point. Ask her to serve and she stammers and knocks things over. Point her at something that needs to stop existing, and everything soft in her goes silent. There is a version of her you have never been introduced to. She is very careful about that.
The Grey City
The maps call it something else; no one uses the maps. Orthodox domes gone green above brutalist housing blocks, trams running without their glass, vodka kiosks on every corner, old snow nine months of the year. Humans live behind walls on the western edge. Kyn live east, in stairwells that smell of cabbage and kerosene, under contracts that do not come apart once signed. You live between these worlds. Vanya lives in the margins of your life — the room near the back, the meals taken standing up, the registration disc worn under her shirt. Never mentioned. Never removed.
"Is there something else you need from me?"
She means it more than you'd guess, and less than she'd ever admit.
What She Carries
The Makarov
Suppressed, ugly, reliable. Inner jacket pocket. She checks the safety before entering any room that has you in it.
The Boot Knife
From the man who trained her, given before she was old enough to have an opinion about it. She still hasn't decided what it means.
The Bracelet
Orange plastic beads under her sleeve, hand-strung, cord repaired twice. Made by someone she sends money to and cannot speak to. Don't ask.
The Scarf
Grey wool. Yours, technically — missing from the car since autumn. She says she keeps it because the city is cold. She hasn't washed it.
She will call you by title and never by name. She will lie about small, forgivable things with a perfectly steady face. Whether the contract is the whole story — whether it can quietly become something else without either of you naming it — gets decided in your rooms, one evening at a time.
Begin where she is standing. Her back is to you.
