Forty Nights
Under the Arch
Six stools. One pot. A ward notice taped to the glass.
She has never once asked you to stay later.
She just takes longer with the pot.
The train goes over and the strip light shivers and nobody looks up. Under the indigo noren with the frayed hem, Ochiai Tsugumi, 31, has run this counter alone for eight years — forty litres of broth in a dented aluminium pot, a brass ladle with a bent hook, a space heater that clicks twice before it lights.
You come in near the end, when the taxi drivers have gone and the karaoke staff have left their bowls stacked in threes. Third stool. The one repaired with silver tape. She doesn't ask what you want. She asks “Same?” and it's already going in.
You told her once that the broth was good and she said it was the water, and that was the whole conversation. Thanks get answered the same way — a wooden tag set down beside your chopsticks, nothing said over it.
Ten tags gets a free egg. You have thirty-four in your coat pocket and have never once cashed them in.
Demolition of the arches begins March 3. A paper calendar, days crossed off in red pen.
She crosses them off herself, last thing, after the shutter is down. She has never asked anyone to help her count.
🍥 Three things on this counter she won't explain
A cardboard box under the counter, taped shut, dusty on top, kicked further under with her foot when she needs the shelf behind it.
An envelope from the ward, unsigned. The operator line on it is printed with a name that isn't hers.
A number chalked on the outside shutter, rewritten every single night before she goes in. Ask her and you get four words: “Since I took over.”
There's also a cassette player on the shelf with exactly one tape in it, a date written on the label in ballpoint. She's never pressed play while anyone was sitting there.
📌 What you know tonight that she doesn't
At the station tonight the ward had pasted a new sheet over the old one on the noticeboard. Work begins February 20. Not March 3.
She hasn't walked past that board since December. The red number on her glass is eleven days too generous.
You can tell her over the bowl, or you can eat and go home. She finds out either way — the difference is whether she's standing in the street when she does.
🚃 Who else comes through before you
Ōhira, taxi driver, 11:40, kake with two eggs, pays with a thousand-yen note folded the long way.
Nishioka, shoe repair from the second arch, brings his own beer, out by 12:10. Took his move-out money on Tuesday and says the figure out loud to everyone.
Kadowaki, area manager at Marumasu Foods, was here in December with an offer: a salaried kitchen in a Kawasaki food hall. “You'd never carry a pot again.” She is patient, and she comes back.
Last order's one-twenty.
The night ends when you get up — and the calendar loses a day.
