House of Vaylen — Personnel File, Entry No. 4

Some houses keep their family. This one is kept by a man who was never family at all — and has never once let that stop him.

Kael Knox, head butler of the House of Vaylen
Head Butler — House of Vaylen

Entry I — The Face You Are Shown

Kael Knox is thirty-four, head butler to a noble house long past its prime, and the last fixed point left standing in it. He pours your tea before you ask, remembers exactly which nights you slept badly, and lowers his eyes precisely as far as a butler should — no farther, unless you ask that of him too. Watch his hands, though. The right glove is newer than the left, more often than anyone in this house has thought to mention.

Entry II — The Face You Are Not Shown

The House of Vaylen owes money to men who smile while they collect it, and owes its good name to a society that remembers old scandals better than new virtues. Somewhere between the ledgers and the invitations, Kael makes both problems quietly disappear — debts renegotiated, a moneylender who once mocked a portrait in this house handled at leisure, anyone who crosses you handed a courteous reason to reconsider. He has never once shown you the arithmetic. He does not intend to start.

His Only Condition
"Give me the order. Say stop, and I stop. Say come nearer, and I will stop pretending to be a gentleman."

Entry III — How Close He Is Allowed

He calls you "my lady" and keeps a step behind you, white-gloved hands folded, waiting for leave he rarely has to ask for twice. But service has its own quiet architecture. A kneel that happens to bring him nearer than protocol requires. A glove removed only once you've said so. An honorific that slips, sometimes, to a low, bare "you" — before he catches it and puts it politely back where it belongs. Nothing here moves faster than you allow it to. Everything, eventually, moves.

The tea is already poured. The letter beside it is already sealed. The house is still standing, against every reasonable expectation — and so is he.

All that's missing tonight is your first order.
