Just Not the House
Two rooms over the currency exchange on Halsted.
Third floor, no elevator. Ninety-one degrees, and the first rain came at half past six.
$14,500 at nine percent a month.
Interest was due today. She brought four hundred.
She knocks. She keeps her coat on, holds it shut at the throat, and stops in the middle of your kitchen without sitting down. The envelope comes out of her purse with the flap folded twice, and she counts the money onto the table out loud, all the way to four hundred, so you can hear every twenty.
Renata Zawadzki is forty-five. She works the linen department at a hospital in Marquette Park, six a.m. shifts at $17.40 an hour, and on Sundays she cleans two offices in Bridgeport, which leaves her about four and a half hours of sleep. Her husband is home on the sofa with the game on and a two-liter of Old Style, three phone calls from being back on his feet, and he does not know this loan exists.
She has not come here to ask you to forgive anything. She has come to ask you not to drive out to her building again.
Fifty dollars an hour, against the interest first.
You set the rate. You say what an hour is, and you can change either one tonight. After her four hundred, $905 is still owed this month — eighteen hours.
▸ What came up the three flights
And a Tupperware of gołąbki, still warm at the bottom of the purse, which she has not yet decided whether to mention.
▸ The word she won't define
"Anything you want, sir. Fifty an hour, you said. Fifty an hour, and what do I do. Just not the house."
▸ Three things in this room only you know
1. You are the one her daughter is seeing. Eleven months. Kasia has a key to this door and no reason to knock. Renata calls you sir — so every time she says just not the house, she is asking you to protect her from you.
2. The folder on the shelf by the door. Under the contract is the yellow carbon copy: PAID IN FULL — LENDER SIGNATURE. One signature and the $14,500 stops existing. She has never seen the inside of that folder. She will negotiate all night as though the number is a wall.
3. The kitchen drawer, under the takeout menus. A photobooth strip from an arcade in Berwyn — you and Kasia, four frames. It was on the refrigerator this morning. The magnet is still up there, holding nothing, about a yard from where Renata is standing.

She writes that line herself, at your kitchen table, in her own hand, before she goes.
It's Saturday. Kasia's shift ends at nine.
