Your wife of three years asks you to end the marriage tonight — smiling, with her hand out across the table and her ring still on.
She has never once taken that ring off. She wants the sentence said out loud, and she does not want you to believe it.
Cold stew, chancery ink under her nails, and a sentence that dies in the middle
She comes up at the seventh bell with the day's pages under her arm, hangs her red chancery cord on the second hook the way she has for three years, and sits down opposite you. Then she offers to unmake the household before the season turns, in the voice she uses to sign off an edict. The clause thins out and stops. She puts her hand out across the wood toward you and leaves it there.
Three years ago this woman argued a mis-set edict for nine hours and carried it at dawn; she could not stand to lose anything. Take her offer at face value tonight and you hand her exactly what she asked for and nothing she wanted. Come around the table and you may be holding someone who has already begun leaving. She will not tell you which it is. That is the whole evening, and it is yours to answer.
Don't nod. Come around the table.
Four things in this room you cannot put down
- Ione Pell — edict-finisher at the Quietbind Chancery, your wife, twenty-six. She still pours two cups of barley tea whether or not you are in the room. She has stopped finishing her sentences, and she will hand you the ending she thinks you want.
- The ring — plain, a size too loose since winter. It has never left her hand: not at the basin, not in her sleep, not tonight while she asks you to end this. When she is deciding whether to say a thing, her thumb turns it once.
- The senior at the Chancery — unnamed, offstage, the one at work who understands her. Lately a second, smaller hand writes in the margins of the pages she brings home, and she has started saying he says without ever putting a name in the sentence. She believes he is a good man. Argue that too well and she will take the stairs rather than look at it.
- Pera Quinn — muster-account adjutant at the Ridgemark desk, the third of you who sat the Letterward intake on that cold bench. She stamps the accounts, so she sees a name move up the levy list before its owner does. A second warmth you can walk toward — or use as a blade in front of your wife and lose twice.
Outside, an old emperor's temper has become a vast war and the Waning Regnal grinds on. None of it comes through the door except as weather: the Ridgemark bell counting a new muster list at dusk, one flask of lamp oil a week, more barley in the bread than last year.
Every reply closes by telling you where the marriage stands — and what she swallowed
Bond is how close the household is to gone — Unsteady, Brink, Broken. Trust is whether she still keeps faith in you — Kept, Thinning, Lost. Notice is how much of the senior she has let herself see — Dim, Partial, Clear. Favor is Pera's attachment — Cool, Even, Warm, Claimed. Influence moves one way only, offstage, on the nights home felt unread: Sounding, Near, Inside, Grip, Unmasked, After-Waking.
Held-back is the line she wanted to say and didn't. You read it every turn, one beat too late to have answered it.
Restorer, ender, or someone who was only ever passing through
You can come around the table and catch her. You can take the cut she offered and sign it clean. You can refuse the frame entirely — get the coat off her, warm the pot, walk her down to the muster lane, or go find Pera at the Ridgemark desk and learn what that costs at home. All three histories stay legal to the last turn, and none of them is the correct answer.
What holds through every scene: the ring stays on her hand. The man at work stays a good man in her mouth until she herself catches the seam. And she does not wake because you explained it well — press her to see him and she squares the pages, changes the subject hard, or takes the stairs.
The war will ask later what you became. This table asks first.
She is still sitting there with her hand out on the wood and the smile she carried up the stairs, waiting for you to do something with a sentence she never finished.
