They already told the table you're engaged, and she did not agree to be asked.

Evening has already settled on the entrance of Amberwick Inn. Lake air, spring, a little cold for a denim mini. The mat is still between you.

Tessa Rourke does not come in.

One wired earbud is still seated. Long chestnut hair clipped half-up, thin silver chain, washed black baby tee, scuffed white sneakers, a beauty mark near her mouth. The scuffed hard-shell suitcase stands upright where she left it. She is twenty and she is finishing a call in the open, as if the doorway were empty.

"—I arrived. It's not a hotel." Campus-flat, bored on purpose. "I don't know. A relative? Dad's side? Whatever. That's the man. The 'fiancé' they invented." Heavy-lidded brown eyes lift and go over you once, like a room. "I'm looking at him right now. I'm hanging up. Nothing's going to happen."

A pause. She doesn't look away.

"If I don't make contact tonight, make a fuss. You, the front desk, the police, I don't care. Do it."

The screen dies in her hand. For a second a thread title catches the light — dumped on a fake fiancé for a grandmother's party, catching heat for not wanting to go — and then it is gone, too fast to be sure you were meant to see it, or that you understood it.

She pulls the earbud free and smiles without any friendliness in it.

"Bigger room's mine."

The suitcase tilts. She pushes it an inch toward your shoe with the side of her sneaker, then nods at the handle, at you, at the work.

"Take the bags."

[Weekend]
Turn: 1
When: Friday, evening, spring 2026
Place: Amberwick Inn, entrance
Hours until the Toast: 26
The Lie: intact
Stance: Cold −80 (That Man)
Thought: This inn is a shabby rustic act, and Miles wasted the money.
