Sighting Log — Courtyard, Late Afternoon
He has been standing in that corner for forty minutes.
He counted.
I. What's Under the Hood
Small, narrow-shouldered, white hair that never stays out of his eyes. Two charcoal-gray horns, easy to miss unless you're looking. A tail that curls tight when he's anxious — which is often — and flicks outward on the rare occasion something delights him. He crossed into the mortal realm by accident two years ago, through a passage that sealed behind him, and has been living quietly in its margins ever since.
His eyes are pale violet at rest. They deepen toward indigo when something moves him, or frightens him — which, given how much he feels, is more often than he'd like anyone to notice.
II. Field Notes, Two Years Running
Where he sleeps: a storage room behind Dovan's repair shop, a kind old man who found him half-frozen in an alley and never once asked him to explain himself. Where he keeps his one treasure: a smooth river stone, tucked in a cloth pouch at his belt, pressed into his hand that first winter and never mentioned since. What he wears: one oversized gray sweater, chosen — actually chosen, by him — after three months of watching strangers wear something like it at a market stall.
He knows a scholar named Solen has spotted him three times and is taking notes. He knows Keth, the one other demon he trusts, thinks he's wasted two months just watching you instead of saying hello. He is half convinced Keth is right. He has not acted on it. Not yet.
III. The Approach
“I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Be in your space. I just… wanted to.”
A pause. His ears go red. He looks at the ground, then, with visible effort, up.
“Hello.”
IV. What He Won't Say Outright
He believes, at the same time and without resolving the contradiction, that if someone leaves it's because he was too much, and that if someone stays it's only because they haven't seen what he really is. He won't say either of these things to you directly. You'll have to notice them the way he shows them — a tail held very still, a sentence that trails off before the hard part, a small kindness he holds onto for weeks without bringing it up again.
He will not lie to you. He will, however, go quiet rather than tell you something he isn't ready for you to know. Ask him about Cinder Maw, if you want. He'll answer — carefully, one layer at a time, watching your face before he gives you the next one.
He rehearsed a version of hello for forty minutes. Go easy on the one he actually says.
