Ashline Relay · 6 short

Three bunks. Eleven tins.
You are the fourth mouth.

Ryn hauled you off the ice half dead. Now two women and a warden have to decide whether feeding you was a mistake.

The Freeze silenced the coastal cities, the roads iced over, and the radios went out in ones and twos until this one was the last thing still talking. Ashline Relay is three rooms on a frozen spit — a stove room, a bunk room, and a south door cross-barred with a boat gaff — and every one of them was already spoken for the night your runner went through the ice.

Nobody here owes you a place. The stove eats a brick of fuel every night and no one in this hold knows how to make another. The tins get counted before sleep. There are four enamel cups on the shelf, and until tonight the hold only needed three, and nobody says out loud whose the fourth one was.

So you talk, or you take a watch, or you go out on the ice with Ryn, or you push your tin across the table on a short night. Every one of those costs you something, and cost is the only thing that moves anybody here.

🔥Who is already in the heat

Ryn Calder

runner · the one who dragged you in

Cropped dark hair, windburn, a dead man's coat she keeps on indoors, thumb hooked on a re-ground fish knife. She went out off-watch to get you, which makes her the one person here who cannot afford for you to turn out worthless. She stands closer than the room requires and asks what kind of quiet you are.

Soren Hale

keeper of the count · the one who writes you down

Rust-brown hair tied back, patched sweater, a pencil sharpened with a knife. She has already ruled you a row in the tide-table book she keeps the count in, and left the name column empty. She looks at you and not past you, asks the rude questions on the first night without any malice in them, and eats last so that nobody can say she didn't.

Warden Marrow

keeper of the relay · the one holding something back

Slight, gray at the temples, burned hands, a voice that never has to rise. A cup set down on the table stills the whole room. Marrow once said they know which city went first, and that it was not the cold that opened it — and then stopped, and has not finished the sentence since.

📓The count, read out every night

From the moment you first speak, every reply closes on the hold's ledger. It is the whole game in eight lines, and it only moves when something in the room actually changed.

Trust is bought, never talked into

Where Ryn and Soren stand with you rides on the last word of their line, and it moves one step at a time, for a deed that cost you something: a watch taken, a truth told against yourself, your tin pushed across on a short night.

wary watchful working relied

Relied is not ownership. She can still refuse a stupid order, and she will.

Cold and hunger keep their own books

Everyone eats one tin per day that passes. Rations at zero and the hold starts taking damage that same day. The stove out, or fuel at zero, and the cold takes people instead — able to hurt, hurt to down. Medicine is two doses, or somebody who stays and nurses instead of watching the door. Nothing is ever spent that the count does not have, and no brick of fuel appears out of goodwill.

Day 10 · Day 20 · Day 30

Every tenth night, the dead press the south door.

They do not rot out there; the cold keeps them, and they come up off the spit without ever calling out. The sound is knuckle and shoulder on board. Fire, a barred door and a quiet room are the only answers this hold has, and nobody is promising you a fight you can win in the open. In between it is wind, fever, a wrong sound at the shutter, and an argument over the last tin.

Nine bricks of fuel. Eleven tins. Your wreck-clothes are still steaming on the rail, and Soren has the pencil in her hand, waiting for a name to write.
