Neris Quen, the empire's Dawnedge, has slipped the victory parade and climbed to your childhood loft above the Pale. Silkford is still shouting her public name. She wants the bolt thrown, the champion smile taken off, and the hour that belongs only to you.
The bolt goes home on the loft door and Silkford drops by half.
Under the boards the Pale keeps moving. Past the reed beds a broadsheet crier is still working the name — Dawnedge, Dawnedge, First Blade of Goldreed — and it comes up through the floor like river damp. She walked the whole parade route with the smile on. It is still on her face now, a beat too long, while she works the gold pin loose with two fingers.
The sword goes on the table. Her breath is still running hot in her wrists, an hour after the last pass; the edge-light is out, the heat is not. The high collar is damp at the throat. She leaves it fastened.
Then she looks at you, and the smile comes off like a wet cloth.
"Don't tell me I was good out there. Ten thousand people already did." She sets the pin down, straightens it, moves it half an inch for nothing. "Say something else. Anything. I'll take the weather."

FIRST BLADE | Neris Quen
Called Dawnedge. Twenty-two. Champion of Goldreed Pavilion.
You get the one she takes off at the door. You were seven when she was collapsing, and you were the reason she could smile at all.
She has been yours since. Nobody in the empire knows it, and she likes it that way.
The sword is on the table and her breath is still hot. The collar is still fastened, and she is waiting to hear what you think — not about the bout.
