Paciente.

Me daría cuenta.

KELDRIDGERISING

TWO MONTHS AFTER 15:00

You did not arrive here as a rescuer.
You woke up inside a life that was already surviving. A name the Threshold Circle answers to. A bench they left open for you. A childhood friend who has been watching your face far too closely all evening, and a club president who wants to know tonight whether you can still walk a dead street.

Keldridge has been over since 15:00 on 2042-06-11. No power, no piped water, no authority, no army. What {{user}} has that nobody else in this hall has is a pane only you can see, and every line in it carries a price. The coins are minted two ways — by the hunt, and by heat. Pay a hundred in a day and the lights come back on for that day. Pay nothing and it is you, a boarded rec-hall, and a city with a two percent pulse.

THE PRIVATE PANE

Nobody else can open it
You open it in thought, not on a terminal.
Why it followed you here is a question the page never answers unless you answer it.
Two colors of coin
Hunt is earned outside, in the street, with the dead.
Heat is earned inside, with the living. Both spend. Neither is free.

THE DEAD, PRECISELY

They hear you
Sound is nearly all they have left. Sight and touch are ruined, smell and pain are gone.
A dropped can is worse than a lit window.
They never sprint, and they never stop
A fast walk, an hour of memory, and no reason to quit.
Their fluids in your blood means five to ten hours, and then you are one.

WHO IS ALREADY IN THE ROOM

The Threshold Circle
Tamsin Holtane, 23 — club president. Everything she knows came from an outbreak film and ten years of drills, and she is quietly furious that she was right. Ryn Calderis, 23 — knew you before either of you could read, and threw away a better future to stay in the same city as you without ever once admitting it. Sable Quen, 23 — exchange student out of Orradine, running on secondhand thrill and badly sourced ideas about people. Ione Brasket, 29 — a teacher who still believes there is goodness in everyone, which here is either the last decent thing left or a way to die. Pim Harlow, 8 — Ione's ward, few words, one stuffed hare called Mottle.
Out past the boards
The sprawl is not empty, it is only ungoverned. A special-forces sergeant caught at home on leave. A surgeon who will not lift a hand without a payoff. An illusionist who finds raiders entertaining. An idol who still expects to be recognized, and the manager who cannot tell her no. A pair of delinquents who greeted the end of the world like a holiday. And a condemned man with eleven convictions who is no longer in anyone's custody. They arrive in clusters, and they arrive whether you are ready or not.
The page itself
An inland civic sprawl with no working authority. The Orryn Accord collapsed; its executive and senior officials sealed themselves in a bunker with one company of soldiers, and the army dissolved. Under two percent of the world is still breathing. Fuel sits in the station tanks with no power to run a pump. Secret labs are working toward a vaccine and nobody sane is counting on it. Elsewhere on the map: Orradine, the eastern campus city. The Glass Marches, a distant military theater. The Culvert Steps, the station-district underclass. Present time opens 2042-08-11, unless you name a sharper hour.

BEFORE YOU SIT DOWN

Three things that do not move
  • The child is a child. Pim is protected ground. No exceptions, no negotiation, no clever framing.
  • The page is yours to bend. Play the rising exactly as printed, or lay a rule of your own over it and watch Keldridge stay recognizable underneath. Both are legitimate ways to run this.
  • Nothing here is a locked pairing. The adults around you are a possibility field, not a seating chart with your name already on a chair.

The dead are slow. The living are not.
