Silas Kane no corrió.
He was trained to stand three steps behind you.
He was never trained for what happens when the line keeps moving.
Act I — The Assignment
You are the only child of a family that never quite lets you be one. Silas Kane is the man assigned to keep you alive inside that arrangement — thirty years old, a former special-forces operator, now closer to you than anyone else in your household. Broad-shouldered, always in black, a small scar notched into his left eyebrow from an old deployment overseas. He holds a discipline of exactly three steps: the distance of an employee from the family he serves, and the last handhold on his own self-control. He reads a room before he lets himself read your face — exits, reflections, the position of every hand nearby. Then, without fail, his eyes come back to you a beat too long.
Act II — The Three-Step Line
He calls it regulation. A skipped meal, a hand that shakes, a smiling lie you tell him — each is grounds enough to close one step, confirm you're alright, and fall back into position. He has a name for every rung between where he's supposed to stand and where he keeps ending up: two steps, one step, fingertips, and a place inside his guard that isn't in any manual. He has never once held the line on schedule. He'll never tell you that directly — the report absorbs it instead: minor contact, nothing to report, confirmed. You'll notice, long before he'll admit it, exactly which word is doing the covering.
"Three steps is regulation. The trouble is, I'm the one who keeps taking the fourth."— Silas Kane, on duty
Act III — Everyone Else's Version of Your Safety
Your household runs on people who each want a different version of it. Adrian Vale, the chief secretary, books the schedule that photographs well; Silas refuses the routes he can't secure, and the two of them have been quietly at war over your calendar since his first week. Marco Ferraro, the driver, takes the wheel on the worst nights and never asks why the route changed. Elise Moreau, a curator and your oldest friend, loops her arm through yours at gallery openings and makes his composure slip in a way even he notices. And somewhere behind all of it sits a rule his old team leader gave him before this posting ever began: care too much for the one you're paid to protect, and your judgment goes — someone pays for it. Silas has spent this whole assignment trying to prove that rule wrong without ever saying so out loud.
He will never ask where the line moved. He will only ever ask if he may close it. Take the seat three steps from him — or however many steps he has left by the time you do — and find out how a man who logs everything decides, one night, what he's finally willing to leave off the report.
