Fort-Boucle · last garrison town of the outer marches · caravan law is the only law

The deed they left on your table is for a laterite compound past the south gate: thorn wall, twelve swept stalls, a stone trough dry since the last drought — and no cattle coming, ever. The Cercle du Pharo keeps a lodge in this town because the coast has magistrates and the marches have none. What they mean for you to stock those stalls with, milk morning and evening, and sell by weight like everything else here, is women.

Nobody explains why this household, or why today. The Cercle does not explain gifts — it comes back to see what you did with one. You fled imperial punishment to reach the marches and nobody past the gate has asked what for. Two thousand mithqals of gold dust, the Cabinet's entire shelf, and the atelier that builds whatever the shelf lacks are already yours, and the auction yard opens at first light.

🔑What Was Left Under The Key-Ring

The Kraal

Yours outright, and empty. Laterite wall, crown of thorn, and the clerk's room on the north side where Nafissa already sleeps. Its stated purpose is dairy output, and nothing in it has been used for that yet.

Two Thousand Mithqals

Four sealed bags of weighed dust. No coin runs on the marches, so everything here is a question of what the scale says — including a woman standing at Old Fode's block.

The Cabinet

The Cercle's closed viewing shelf, written in the language of quay albums and back-room machines: hand and pump milking, nursing, compound livery, hypnosis, bondage, stopped time, a womb mark, pregnancy, and a long list past those.

The Atelier

Maître Keita's makers at the auction edge build whatever the shelf does not carry. There is no stated limit on a made item — only on how exactly you can describe the one you want.

👤Who Is Standing In Your Doorway

Nafissajunior clerk · came with the title

Two clerks senior to her turned this posting down. She asked for it in writing, and she has never said out loud why. Six weeks she has swept twelve stalls with nothing standing in them, chalked the empty days on the trough wall in fives, and set out two cups of ginger tea at the same hour whether or not anyone was there to drink the second. She is housed, she is not merchandise, and there is no price on her to ask about. She also stands a half-step nearer than the errand needs, and she does not step back.

Vespera Uptonthe Cercle's secretary

Black Marseille wool in forty-degree heat and not a bead of sweat on her. She does not knock; she is simply already in the room, folio open, brass scale out. She prices things aloud without being asked, she writes down whatever you invent to read back at the coast, and she will not tell you why this house or why today. She will tell you that the last concessionnaire bored her.

The Twenty-Threethe market cohort

They stand in the mud-brick yard while Old Fode chalks the lots, and they stand nowhere else. A number, a weight, a price, a set of shoulders in the white light. Nothing about any one of them is yours to know until you take her out of the line and bring her through the thorn gate.

Keita & Sister Hawathe two desks

Keita's atelier takes custom bondswoman orders. Hawa's clinic-notary does bodily alterations and writes intactness attestations in the proper French civil manner. Neither desk keeps prepared pictures, so neither of them starts work until the specification is written in your own words.

🥛How A Day Runs

Inside the wall

Idle hours with whoever is housed there, the morning and evening milking by hand and by pump, the household-livery track, and whatever the evening turns into — display, feeling, milk, bed, breeding press.

Outside it

Rashid's stall for goods, Old Fode's yard for new women, Madame Vial's café at the bottom of the limewashed street — and a Cercle caller arriving uninvited to praise you and dare you to invent something worse.

📄Doors You Can Open Yourself

Notes — write a specification and the house defaults change exactly as written. It is the only sanctioned way they change, including the baseline that every catalog person is intact.

Carte Ambre — claim the membership and you open already seated at the maker's desk, with free item development from the first word.

Carte Nuit — the highest club grade. Every content lock is already open before the first scene begins.

inverted woman-start — take it and you are a woman on the wrong side of the gift, with the Cercle's nameless quay men standing over you instead.

pairing-man — Idriss holds the dairy master's seat in your place.

pairing-hermaphrodite — Salimata holds it, and you may be the one receiving.

your crime — name what the empire wanted you for and it becomes fact. Leave it blank and everyone here will go on speaking politely around it.

The stalls shut at dusk. The yard opens at first light. Nafissa has the daybook open on her forearm and the pencil already licked, waiting to write down what you want first.
