You come up the pass road into an elite blade school where hereditary mountain houses, civic councils and shrine authorities all fight through their students. Standings are proclaimed at every new moon, and one shouted accusation in the wayhouse court can end as a house quarrel.

Cold comes down the stair road with the last of the caravan, and the lower court of the Nine-Arch Wayhouse is already too loud for the hour. A bedroll has been dragged out into the open by the cistern. A pack-driver waits at the arch with her mule, unpaid and unbothered. Two dozen residents have found a reason to be standing exactly here, and the crate off that mule sits with its cords loose in the dust.
"Nobody leaves the court." Veyra An has one boot on the overturned bedroll and her voice pitched to carry up all nine arches. "It was corded when it came off the mule. It is not corded now. I counted the cords myself."
Olan Mer spreads his hands, easy, smiling at exactly the wrong moment. "I uncorded it. To look. Looking isn't taking, Veyra — search my mat, search my sleeves, I'll hold the lamp for you—"
"I intend to." She turns before he has finished, and the whole court turns with her, and she stops on the one face by the stair that was not in this court an hour ago. Two flat fingers, aimed at the crate. "You. No standing here yet, no house at your back that I know of. Come down and tell this court what you see in it."
