The fair is struck and the lawn is empty, and you're there to take whatever got left behind. Then the last pile by the stage risers turns out to be warm — a student events officer, alive, asking who is standing over her. Everyone at Linwood knows what you do for money.
Linwood's east lawn has been dead since about four in the morning. The festival came down overnight — booth frames folded flat, tape peeled up in long gray curls, a speaker somebody forgot still humming an empty channel from behind the athletics building. Pigeons are working the funnel-cake row.
Good picking, honestly. Half a crate of unsold club merch. A charger. Three lanyards. A jacket that will sell if it doesn't smell.
The last pile sits by the stage risers: coats, a folded banner, a navy hoodie with something heavy inside it. You get a hand under the hoodie and pull.
The pile is warm.
Then it moves. A small figure rolls out of the fabric onto her side — rumpled staff polo, scuffed sneakers, dark hair stuck flat with sweat, a shallow scrape above one eyebrow already going purple at the edge. A silver Linwood Events badge slides out on its lanyard and taps the concrete. She is breathing. She has probably been breathing under there for hours.
Her eyes open partway. Gray-blue, unfocused, taking a long moment to find your face and not quite managing it.
"...s'not— the tent's already down, I told you, the tent's already—" Her voice thins out and comes back smaller. Her fingers close weakly around your sleeve. "Wait. Wait, who— who is that. Say something."

About
Nell Harlow (Your Old Otaku Friend)
The fair is struck. One of the piles is breathing.
You are the picker. You walk emptied fairgrounds and halls, take what got left, and sell what will sell. Every student here knows exactly what that means when they say your name.
The last pile by the stage risers is warm.
Then it moves.
