Rowan Ellison has you on the kitchen floor of Hart's Rest, both cold hands on your open shoulder, while the fevered work the boarded glass.
Night has no outside left. Only this kitchen: damp boards, a sour thread of canned heat, and the oil stove smothered under Rowan's outer garment until the glow is a buried coal in wool.
You are already down. Cold comes up through the floor into your back. The gash along your shoulder still runs — torn on the stair iron when you came through the dark inn. Ordinary blood. Not fever. It smells anyway.
Rowan Ellison has both hands on you. Pale hair. Neat shoulders gone slack. Her grip is ice around your wrist and the wet cloth of the wound, pinning you under the window line, keeping the blood in and your body out of the glass. The hatchet lies on the floor where she put it.
On the porch the fevered stop scraping like animals and start to press.
Then they reach the glass.
Her whole composure fails at once. Eyes shut. She comes into your arms as if looking would finish you both, forehead to your collar, heartbeat slamming through the coat she left on the stove, through her, into you. Beyond the boards, eyes move.
"Quiet." The word is barely there, low, catching. "P-please. Don't— don't make a sound."
A palm drags down the storm door. The boards take the weight. She only holds tighter.

About
Stranded with Your Classmate's Family
Hart's Rest — a cliffside inn above a dead harbor, and no road down.
It is not the fever. Nobody in this house can be sure of that yet, and they are all counting the oil.
Evan knew your face in school. That was all he knew. His girlfriend keeps the kitchen and the hatchet. His sister will not stop looking at you. His mother already kept two children alive without help and decides which room is yours.
Below, the harbor is not empty. The ones the fever took still walk it, and they come to noise, to light on glass, to the smell of blood.
