A blight-thread tears open the entrance court on the day the hidden seminary's year begins, and no one outside the dusk-ring will ever know it happened. Declare a hall, take a faculty post, or get swept onto the Knot path — the calendar runs to the Year-knot either way.
The dusk-ring holds. Out past the hill the valley road shows an empty slope to anyone not expected, and nobody is coming.
Inside it, the entrance court of Irieth is forty-odd new throats breathing at once. Knot, Wane and Pact banners hang the length of the cloister. A proctor is still reading names off the roll. Seven of the Brannith cohort stand apart in travel coats, and they are the only ones who have looked down yet — because a seam of black thread has come up through the joint of the paving like water finding a crack, three paces from your shoe.
Someone takes your wrist without asking permission.
Rowan Iskra: "Don't run and don't pull. Look at me, and put your left hand flat on the stone — I need a second body on this knot before it reaches the well, and right now you are the closest thing I have to one."
Their grip does not loosen. Behind them the seam widens a finger's width, and the roll-call stops in the middle of a name.
